Interview with Pauline Boeira

“The energy sector increasingly needs professionals with an interdisciplinary perspective—individuals capable of navigating the intersection of science, engineering, and industrial application,” says Pauline Boeira. Holding bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Chemical Engineering, Pauline began her career at a shipyard. Today, she leads the Advanced Fuels Program within Shell Brazil’s Technology division and serves as Deputy Director of CINE. Lithium-Sulfur batteries

An international scientific collaboration led by CINE has yielded fundamental advances in the optimization of lithium-sulfur batteries—an emerging technology offering higher capacity and lower costs than lithium-ion batteries. The work, conducted during Murilo Machado Amaral’s doctoral studies, addressed key issues affecting the stability of these devices that have hindered their widespread commercialization. The results were made possible through the participation of a network of CINE researchers and collaborators from institutions in the United States, who contributed their expertise and equipment. Book on chemistry and sustainable development

Professor Elton Sitta (UFSCar), a researcher at CINE, is a co-editor of a book regarding the contributions of chemistry to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), released this June by the publisher EdUFSCar. Elton and other CINE researchers authored several chapters in the book. “The theme aligns strongly with the Center’s areas of activity, as its focus on solutions for the energy transition connects directly to various SDGs,” the professor says. The book is recommended for students, researchers, faculty members, and other professionals interested in integrating sustainable development concepts into their academic or technological activities. Professor Ana Flávia Nogueira (UNICAMP), a researcher and director of CINE, visited London in June to attend a board meeting for the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) journals “Journal of Materials Chemistry C” and “Materials Advances”. Ana Flávia serves as an associate editor for both journals, which focus on advances in materials research and their applications. Held at the RSC’s headquarters at Burlington House, the meeting provided an opportunity for board members to discuss the journals’ achievements to date and exchange ideas regarding future strategies for the publications.

Professor Juarez L. F. Da Silva (IQSC-USP), a researcher and coordinator of the Computational Materials Design division at CINE, was one of the speakers at the 20th Brazilian School on Electronic Structure. Juarez presented a lecture titled “Computational Design of Advanced Electrocatalysts for Hydrogen and Oxygen Evolution Reactions.” The event—held this year from July 6 to 9 at CNPEM (Campinas, SP)—aims primarily to train and further the education of undergraduate and graduate students in the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, and related areas. Juarez first participated in this event in 1994, when he was an undergraduate student.
