CINE researcher elected vice-president of the International Society of Electrochemistry

Professor Lucia Helena Mascaro (UFSCar), a researcher at CINE, has just been elected vice-president of the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE) for the period 2026-2028. Established 76 years ago, this scientific society currently has more than 3,000 members from approximately 70 countries across all continents.
The CINE researcher’s main role within the ISE Executive Committee will be to lead the regional sections, coordinating and integrating them to strengthen ISE’s representation and expand its reach and diversity globally.
“It is a great pleasure to contribute to ISE at this time,” says the scientist. “I hope to strengthen interactions between regions and encourage the advancement of strategic areas, such as electrochemistry focused on new energy sources and energy transition, which is also a focus of CINE,” she comments.
Electrochemistry is a fundamental area of knowledge for enabling the energy transition and building a low-carbon economy. It is present in technologies such as batteries, fuel cells, electrolysis for low-carbon hydrogen production, CO₂ capture and conversion processes, and ammonia production.
“By bringing together a highly qualified global community committed to research and innovation in electrochemistry, ISE plays a strategic role in this scenario,” says Professor Lucia. “Through the events organized within ISE, I intend to encourage actions that promote interdisciplinarity and dialogue between basic science and technological development for clean energy.”
Lucia Mascaro is a full professor in the Chemistry Department at UFSCar. She is vice-coordinator of the Green Hydrogen program at CINE and research coordinator at the Center for the Development of Functional Materials (CDMF).
Throughout her professional career, she has maintained an active participation in scientific societies. She was director of the Electrochemistry Division at the Brazilian Chemical Society, national secretary of the Ibero-American Society of Electrochemistry, and representative of ISE in Brazil.
She is the author of approximately 200 scientific articles published in international journals and 13 book chapters. She has supervised dozens of research projects for students at all levels and postdoctoral fellows. In 2024, she won the ACS-SBQ “Brazilian Women in Chemistry” Award in the “Leadership in Academia” category.
