More efficient green hydrogen production

A study conducted by CINE researchers has shown a way to increase the efficiency of photoelectrochemical processes used to produce hydrogen with energy from sunlight. The authors replaced water molecules with organic molecules as the source of electrons and concluded that glycerol (a byproduct of biodiesel production) has the best performance. “For large-scale production, organic molecules have proven to be an interesting alternative to avoid corrosion of photocatalysts and the possibility of obtaining other value-added products,” said Professor Elton Sitta (UFSCar), who led the work. Interview with Ernesto Chaves Pereira

“We are developing technologies to produce hydrogen through water electrolysis, taking advantage of the abundance of renewable energy in Brazil, which places the country in a strategic position in the transition to a low-carbon economy,” says Professor Ernesto Chaves Pereira (UFSCar), a scientist with a long and productive career and Principal Investigator of the Green Hydrogen division at CINE. In an interview with our newsletter, he explains how the division is helping the country realize this potential. Learn more.

Materials and devices for the energy transition in Latin America

CINE researchers have been widely involved as authors in a collection of scientific articles on technologies for the energy transition that was published by the prestigious journal Materials Advances. In addition, three members of the center’s Executive Committee served as editors of the collection, which included fifteen articles by scientists from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Cuba and Ecuador, among other countries. Conference on sustainable development

Professor Ana Flavia Nogueira (Unicamp), researcher and Director of CINE, is one of the organizers of the Materials for Sustainable Development Conference (MATSUS Fall 25), which will be held in Valencia (Spain) from October 20 to 24 of this year. Research works on the production, characterization and application of materials and devices for sustainable development can be submitted to the organization for presentation within the 23 thematic symposia of the event.
