CINE and Cubo Itaú hold the first workshop of the Energy Transition Path

The transformation of waste into renewable fuels was the main topic of a workshop held on the morning of May 9 by CINE and Cubo Itaú, an organization dedicated to connecting entrepreneurs, corporations, investors and strategic partners to stimulate technological entrepreneurship and generate business.
Around 150 people, mainly entrepreneurs and different Cubo professionals, participated in the event at the Cubo building in São Paulo and in the online broadcast.
The workshop featured presentations on opportunities and challenges in the production of biogas, biomethane and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). “Each speaker brought scientific concepts combined with market opportunities for sustainable energy generation solutions,” says Camila Pedroso, Education and Dissemination of Knowledge Analyst at CINE, who participated in the organization of the event.
Professor Hudson Zanin (Unicamp), a researcher at CINE, and Antonio Bolognesi, CEO of WTEEC, a company that works in the area of solid waste management and treatment, spoke about biogas and biomethane, two renewable fuels that can be produced from various types of waste, such as food scraps, bagasse or manure. The speakers addressed many aspects of the production of these gases, from their environmental benefits to the sources of financing available for projects of this type.
In another presentation at the workshop, Sindelia Freitas Azzoni, a researcher at Shell Brazil, spoke about sustainable aviation fuel. The scientist explained how SAF can be produced using different processes and raw materials, such as sugarcane waste, corn or agave (a genus of succulent plants that, in Brazil, is cultivated in semi-desert regions of the northeast).
In addition, the event featured a presentation on the technical, economic and socio-environmental assessment of companies’ decarbonization projects, given by Ofélia de Queiroz Fernandes de Araújo, from the InSiIicoNet consortium, which conducts this type of study.
Partnership
Since the beginning of 2024, CINE and Itaú have maintained a partnership to disseminate knowledge about energy transition. Four workshops have already been organized over the past year, addressing technologies for the Brazilian energy transition, regulatory aspects of solar and wind energy, energy efficiency and low-carbon hydrogen. In addition, CINE scientists brought knowledge from their research areas to some Cubo events.
This year, as part of this partnership, the Energy Transition Path is being held, consisting of four workshops on strategic topics to accelerate the decarbonization of the Brazilian energy matrix. The events are free and open to the general public, with prior registration.
“The activities we have carried out within this partnership have shown very positive results, having a real impact on the dissemination of scientific knowledge about the energy transition outside of academia and showing the market possibilities that new fuels offer,” says Ana Flavia Nogueira, director of CINE.
