Abstract:

The limited availability of studies and nationally adapted standards for lithium-ion batteries remains a major challenge in Brazil, particularly regarding the tropicalization of international requirements and the need to provide clear technical responses to civil society about battery safety. This presentation discusses these gaps, reviews key safety and performance testing requirements, and presents the laboratory infrastructure currently being developed by BREnergies to support battery testing, validation, and certification. Preliminary results from the initial testing activities will also be presented, highlighting the potential of this infrastructure to strengthen national capabilities in lithium-ion battery safety and performance assessment.

Dr. João Pedro Aguiar dos Santos is a M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from UNICAMP, with a focus on New Materials and Electrochemical Engineering, completed with Distinction and Honors. He is currently a postdoctoral researcher working in the field of energy storage and battery technologies. He has experience in applied electrochemistry, electronics, and product development, with expertise in flow batteries, intercalation batteries, and supercapacitors. During his Ph.D., he developed low-cost electrochemical cells, a workstation for flow battery characterization, and the Spinning Flow Battery, an original architecture integrating an electrochemical reactor, rotational control, instrumentation, supervisory software, and a Battery Management System (BMS). He also works on electronic hardware development and solutions for energy storage systems, electric mobility, battery testing, validation, and certification for electric vehicles.
