About 200 people<\/b> gathered on October 18 and 19 at the convention center of the Vit\u00f3ria Concept Hotel in the city of Campinas<\/b> (S\u00e3o Paulo State, Brazil) to participate in the third edition of the CINE Conference. Near 80%<\/b> of the attendees were CINE members<\/b>, and 90%<\/b> came from universities and research institutions located in the state of S\u00e3o Paulo. More than 80 research works<\/b> were presented in poster and oral sessions.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

The conference presented and discussed scientific advances in technologies <\/b>for the energy transition<\/b> and for a low-carbon economy<\/b>. The presentations addressed the main challenges to make these technologies viable: to use materials based on elements that are abundant and well distributed<\/b> on the planet, to develop inexpensive and scalable<\/b> processes and to increase devices efficiency<\/b>. In addition, the presenters showed innovations in the development of scientific instruments and methods<\/b> that are necessary to continue advancing the field of \u200b\u200bnew energies.
\nThe event was organized<\/b> by the Center for Innovation on New Energies (CINE) and sponsored <\/b>by Fapesp, Shell, Metrohm Brasil, MBraun and Interprise. The journal ACS Energy Letters and the Royal Society of Chemistry were sponsors of the conference prizes.<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

The opening had speeches by the Director of CINE<\/b>, Prof Ana Flavia Nogueira (Unicamp); the President of the State University of Campinas (Unicamp<\/b>), Prof Antonio Meirelles; the Scientific Director of the S\u00e3o Paulo Research Foundation (Fapesp<\/b>), Luiz Eug\u00eanio Ara\u00fajo de Moraes Mello, and the Manager of the Research and Technology Program in New Energies at Shell<\/b>, Camila Brand\u00e3o, who is the Deputy Director of CINE.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

The authorities featured the importance of aggregating competences and investments from academia and the industry<\/b> to achieve results that benefit society as a whole. Besides that, the essencial role of science in the energy transition was highlighted. \u201cYou are playing a very important role for the country and for the world in building the future we want to see<\/b>,\u201d Camila Brand\u00e3o told the audience, made up mainly of researchers and students.

Prof Magda Titirici <\/b>(Imperial College London, UK) presented advances in sustainable carbon materials obtained from biomass derivatives, and their application in sodium-ion batteries. Prof Edson Leite<\/b> (LNNano – CNPEM, Brazil) told the technical story of the development of hematite-based photoanodes for water splitting devices and the journey to understand their photoelectrochemical properties.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Prof Hudson Zanin<\/b> (Unicamp, Brazil), a CINE member, talked about the advances in materials development to improve the energy density of supercapacitors. Diego Bagnis<\/b>, Scientific Director of ONINN<\/a> (a non-profit private R&D institute located in Minas Gerais, Brazil) addressed the challenges of scaling up the perovskite photovoltaics technology. Prof Julio Meneghini <\/b>(USP, Brazil), Director of the Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Innovation<\/a>, talked about green hydrogen production routes such as ethanol reforming that are promising for the decarbonization of the Brazilian economy.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

In 8 oral presentations, CINE researchers presented their contributions to the development of green hydrogen<\/b> generation, solar-driven CO2 conversion<\/b>, high-energy-density supercapacitors<\/b>, perovskite solar cells<\/b>, and methane to products<\/b> conversion. The talks showed the use of a wide range of advanced experimental and theoretical tools, from in situ <\/i>and operando<\/i> techniques to machine learning.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

The evaluation committee included members of the International Advisory Board of CINE and researchers from CINE and its industrial partners.
