Emerging Technologies for Low-Carbon Hydrogen Production<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A material produced with abundant elements and a technique widely used in industry can optimize a promising technology for hydrogen generation using renewable electricity: the anion exchange membrane electrolyzer. The material is a thin film that, when used as a coating for the electrolyzer’s anode, makes the hydrogen generation process more efficient and stable. The research involved the collaboration of scientific teams from Brazil and Germany, under the coordination of CINE researcher Lucia Mascaro. “The advances achieved in this work help to make the technology more reliable, efficient, and economically attractive for future applications,” says the scientist. Closing of the second cycle of CINE – Ita\u00fa workshops<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A workshop organized by the CINE staff discussed the prospects in Brazil for the use of batteries for energy storage in the electrical grid, as well as the markets for electrified vehicles and wind energy. The event, which took place at UNICAMP at the end of January, included the participation of Ita\u00fa’s Sustainability and ESG team. This was the last workshop of the second cycle of events held within the CINE – Ita\u00fa agreement. \u201cI think the main result of this partnership, which is entering its third year, is an increasingly strong connection between the university and the private sector so that we can all better understand what is happening in new technologies in the area of \u200b\u200brenewable energies,\u201d says Ana Fl\u00e1via Nogueira, director of CINE. Member on the FAPESP Board of Trustees<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

On February 5th, Professor Lucia Mascaro (UFSCar), a researcher at CINE, began her term on the FAPESP Board of Trustees, the highest deliberative body of one of the country’s main research funding agencies. The scientist was appointed to the position by the Governor of S\u00e3o Paulo state, who chose her from a shortlist of three candidates, compiled with the participation of 385 voters from 25 higher education and research institutions. “I bring to the Board the experience gained in initiatives like CINE, where quality science, responsible innovation, and international cooperation go hand in hand,”#34; says Lucia. Reflections on the Energy Transition<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Professor Ernesto Chaves Pereira de Souza (UFSCar) is the author of the chapter “Transi\u00e7\u00e3o Energ\u00e9tica<\/i>” in the book “Di\u00e1logos Avan\u00e7ados 1 – As Ci\u00eancias Diante do Antropoceno<\/i>,” published by USP and UFSCar. In the text, the CINE researcher addresses the various aspects involved in the process of progressively replacing traditional energy sources with renewable sources. Using language accessible to all types of audiences, the scientist presents the technologies available for this transition to occur. Furthermore, he analyzes the fundamental role of public policies and population habits in the process. Meeting with Shell Leaders<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

CINE headquarters, located at UNICAMP, hosted the visit of directors and managers from Shell’s global and Brazilian teams. During the meeting, which took place on January 20th, the main results of CINE’s four divisions in applied research, technological development, and innovation were presented and discussed. Representing CINE were the Director, some principal and co-principal investigators, as well as members of the staff. From Shell, the meeting was attended by Selda Gunsel (Executive VP Technology), Alexander Boekhorst (VP Engineering Technology), Olivier E. Doctoral candidate \u00c9rick Alves Santos (UNICAMP) participated in the 16th International Conference on Advanced Lithium Batteries for Automotive Applications (ABAA-16<\/a>), one of the world’s most important events in the field. Held in Padua, Italy, from November 3rd to 5th, 2025, the conference brought together representatives from the automotive industry, battery manufacturers, policymakers, and researchers from universities from several countries. At the event, \u00c9rick presented a poster with results from his work on lithium-sulfur batteries, developed within the CINE Advanced Energy Storage division, with experiments conducted during his research internship at SLAC \u2013 Stanford Battery Center (USA). <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
